The story and premise were very good. I liked the character development of the main characters. The only thing that kept me from giving a higher rating was the style. I was often jarred by words used in a manner that wasn't right. It seemed like over usage of a thesaurus, placing synonyms rather than ordinary words.

Fun series but the excess of modifiers, adjectives and adverbs, and the usage of odd terms interrupted the flow. Which was too bad as I did like the story, an interesting take on alternative beings as well as a young woman doing all she can in an awful situation.

Fighting a common enemy, but not trusting each other, The First (aka Vampires - a term they hate) and a team of humans is thrown together by circumstances to save both species from genetically engineered monsters. Well developed story line and I want to read more of this series!
Original and totally creative take on the typical vampiric novels filtering around the inter web. I loved the building relationship between characters and the language was very well thought out. Looking forward to reading the following books from this author )

Not a bad start to a little series. This provides a good bit of action and an interesting take on vampires and their predators the Chimera. The novel follows a gang of young adults who have come together on a mission to rid the world of these evil creatures. Each individuals family has been destroyed in one way or another by these creatures and they are out to seek revenge as well as prevent any further harm. It has become a race against production and evolution as the Chimera are being mass produced more are becoming more evolved in their skill.

The story is told from the point of view of Alex the leader of the urban gang out to destroy the Chimera. Her chance encounter with Zeke during battle one night against the Chimera forges an unlikely alliance that proves useful to both. Through conversations with Zeke, Alex learns that the term "vampire" is a foul term that he and his group find "disrespectful and offensive". He explains that they prefer to be known as "the First" because they feel "vampire" tarnishes their honor. After learning that they share the common goal of eliminating the world of Chimera Alex beings to wonder if there could be potential in joining forces to accomplish their goals. While things are not tied up in the end of this novella there is a set up for the story to continue in the next book.

Overall the story is fairly short and a pretty good quick read. I enjoyed the story and will be continuing the series. I lucked out and bought book one when it was free on free on . So after starting book one I snagged the next three which so happened to also be free. If you are tired of the same old thing in urban fantasy, but enjoy a story with vampires this series may interest you.
We read a lot of fantasy books which mention battles and wars and much more. Unfortunately, down the line the focus rests on the love story of the protagonist and the numerous options she has. I was pleasantly surprised to not be reading another fantasy on the same lines.

Alex and Zeke know that if they have to take the Odin down, it has to be together. But is it possible for The First and humans to work together? The First possess the strength and the speed, while the humans have access to information through technology and also the required ammunition.

What is the secret behind the immense power possessed by the Chimeras? What is Alex's need to fight the Odin? Read the book to find out.

For people who think it's just another vampire story, it's surely not. For, Zeke and the First are not portrayed as Gods (read Edward, from Twilight). Of course, the love is there but you have more fights than love scenes. I'd give it a 4/5.
I really enjoyed reading this series and cant wait to the next installment. The beginning friendship of these 2 allies is exciting and you can't wait to see what will happen. Alex has a hard outer shell, but you know that she has a heart of gold that she will only ever share with the few she trusts. And Zeke's coldness just makes you want to shake him till he smiles. I could not put this book down, great story line.
The premise of this story is good, the characters are well-written and their motivations are understandable. It's an interesting take ... teaming humans with vampires. The only thing that kept it from being really fun for me was a little too much "tell" - needing a bit more "show." By that, I mean fewer adverbs and modifiers would have brought me more into the story. I liked it, though, and look forward to reading more by Ms. Fowle.
