Pirate Passion Steamy Historical Romance edition by Lolita London Romance eBooks

Author Lolita London has progressed in her writing since the first book I have read of hers. Her writing has matured, the grammar has improved and she has written in this historical fiction piece an interesting plot. The story begins in Barbados with the main character, June Masters, saying goodbye to her best friend Emma. Emma was leaving the small island town to live in Martinique where she will be married soon. June envied her friend's soon-to-be life. As a young woman, she believed any life off the island would be exciting and adventurous. What she didn't realize was how quickly her life would change, not exactly for the better.

Thomas Irons' was a rogue, in spite of his moneyed upbringing. But that was no longer of any account, since his father had cast him out of his home and refused to acknowledge his existence. Thomas had stepped over the line one too many times. Now he is a drifter, living for the bit coins he receives for miscellaneous jobs. He almost enjoys this life; not, however, when he is accosted by one of his many enemies. This time, it was Charlie, collecting on his gambling debt. Who will it be the next time? As it turns out, the next person to appear before him is June Masters, running away from home.

The two get themselves embroiled in several adventures and scrapes. The story is fairly fast-paced and interesting. June, as it turns out, is looking for her birth father. This was new knowledge for her, and was her attempt to run far away from an arranged marriage she had just learned about. She hires Thomas and their adventures begin. But this isn't just any father she is looking for. She is searching for her father--the pirate, Black John.

I loved the humor included in this adventure tale. The suspense is not overly intense, but enjoyable. Part of the tension includes the haphazard way Thomas tries to take care of June. We wonder will he ever grow up? Still, the author has imbued a charming character in him that grows on the reader over time. It's one of the qualities I like best in this story.

I also enjoy the romance developing between the Thomas and June. But you have to wonder if there's even a chance. June is a naive young woman who just doesn't expect or foresee the disasters heading their way as they search the Caribbean for her pirate father. Thomas seems to get poor June into more trouble than he rescues her from.

Warning: This is a secular read, filled with secular ways of observing the world. There is some 'mature' language and sexual situations. Some of the villains are truly rascals with the depravity to match. I don't recommend it to anyone who is sensitive to this type of book or choosing not to read material of this nature.

Pirate Passion Steamy Historical Romance edition by Lolita London Romance eBooks Reviews

June has always lived a boring, timid life as a pastor’s daughter. One day, her father introduces her to a man a least twice her age that her father has agreed to marry her off to. Desperate to escape, her mother tells her a secret *SPOILER* Years ago her mother had an affair with a pirate named Black John, and he is her real father.

Thomas has been dishonorably discharged from the Navy for seducing the Admiral’s daughter, leaving his Viscount of a father unwilling to speak to him. With nowhere to go, he travels from port to port, working on ships and gambling to survive. Missing the departure of a ship he was working on, he is now stuck in Bridgetown. Bored and penniless, he meets June while searching for her pirate father. He agrees to help her find Black John for 40 schillings. Then their adventure begins
.
The story is pretty cute, but historically inaccurate in regards to speech and terminology, so keep that in mind if it’s the type of thing to bother you.

There weren’t many opportunities to learn June and Thomas’s personalities, making it hard to connect with them. It was also hard to understand why they were attracted to each other. Their romance seemed based on convenience and circumstance rather than love. Their intimacy was mild and lacked passion.

The climax’s resolution had potential, but was too fast and anticlimactic. And the ending just – ends. I wanted to know what their next step was, but was left unfulfilled.

Honestly I was a little disappointed in this story. It was rather lackluster and in some places the writing was almost child-like. The story-line was not new with father, who was not really Jane's father but rather a tyrannical pastor that was giving his daughter away to a man at least twice her age, but a wealthy merchant that would let her live in style. Both Jane and her mother realized this was wrong, and Jane's mother helped her to run away and escape this kind of fate.

Jane made her way to the harbor inns and pubs to find someone to help her find her real father, Black John the pirate. She tells her story to Thomas, a virtual stranger to her. He promises to help her find her father for a price, but Thomas' enemies kept popping up, and while one, Charlie, helped them, the second, Magpie, certainly did not, and was hell bent on using Jane as a replacement prostitute for the 3 that Thomas helped to escape Magpie's clutches.

Jane and Thomas become lovers, they find her father, Black John, who sadly is not much interested in meeting "his kin" as the pirate captain put it. But Black John not only helps his kin, he gets his last big treasure for himself and his crew so he could retire in style because of his help.

One historical fact bothered me - Jane was wearing a bra, but bras were not invented until 1889, and pirating in the Caribbean happened between the 1500's and 1830 meaning Jane couldn't possibly be wearing a bra. More likely she wore a camisole, but certainly not a bra! This irks me!
